Specialist Task Force 505:
IoT Standards landscaping and IoT European Large Scale Pilots (LSP) gap analysis

Team Members:

What we do

STF505 is a group of experts, funded by the European Commission and supported by ETSI, commissioned to provide on the one hand an in-depth analysis of the IoT Standardization landscape (in particular in conjunction with AIOTI, Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation), and on the other hand, an identification of the IoT standardization gaps.

The study considers "vertical" functionalities (standards and protocols) in specific application domains, i.e., a single vertical industry, such as home automation, smart mobility and wearable medical devices, etc. and "horizontal" functionalities that are not specific to any particular domain but aim to provide common standards, protocols and solutions applicable to as many vertical industries as possible.

Objectives:

The essential objectives are:
to analyse the status of current IoT standardisation
to leverage liaisons between SDOs, SSOs, and industrial alliances, which will allow
o to assess the industry and vertical market fragmentation vis-à-vis standardisation and
o to point towards actions that can increase the effectiveness of IoT standardisation, to improve interoperability, and to allow for the building of IoT ecosystems
to foster dissemination work for the sustainable development of a global community of stakeholders involved in the standardization of IoT.

A specific objective of this proposed action is to develop a set of deliverables, including recommendations that are aimed at supporting material for the proposal and implementation of Large Scale Pilots (LSPs):
1. Technical Report on Standards landscape for IoT (who does what, what are the next milestones) and identification of potential frameworks for interoperability (e.g. oneM2M)
2. Technical Report on Identification of gaps and proposals on how to address them in standardisation
3. Summary Report of the ETSI M2M WS 2015 and its thematic sessions on Smart Living and Smart Cities
4. Thematic workshop on Smart Home that will cover different LSP application domains such as Smart Living, eHealth, Wearables and Smart Cities
5. Extended Delivery Workshop centred on the presentation of the STF results and their application by the winning LSP proposals

Why we do it

In the context of the H2020 program, the European Commission has the goal to support the emergence of an eco-system capable of delivering the IoT with actions like

Validation of IoT technologies and approaches through LSPs
Identification of required standards in support of global deployments and interoperability to support the LSPs
For this purpose ETSI has been tasked to provide two reports on “IoT Standards landscaping“ and “IoT European LSP gap analysis“;
ETSI TC SmartM2M launched STF 505 to this task in November 2015

How we do it

The methodology for drafting the TR on “IoT Standards landscaping“ is to collect and analyse SDOs and industry standards, to evaluate their stability and maturity, to analyse complementarities/antagonism with Open Source development, and to provide recommendations.

The methodology for drafting the TR on “IoT European LSP gap analysis“ is to systematically analyse the SDOs standards and roadmaps with the support of a survey, to map the LSPs use cases and lifecycle on the related standards, and to identify gaps in standard support.

The earliest gap analysis will be prepared to be discussed in the workshop dedicated to Smart Home.

The two planned workshops
Smart Home and
Final Extended Delivery Workshop, which is dedicated to the presentation of the STF results and the implementation plans of the winning LSP proposals

will be organized and hosted (co-hosted) based on ETSI Secretariat existing practices and tools. The Final Extended Delivery Workshop will be organized in close cooperation with the European Commission DG CNECT. A Programme Committee for each workshop will identify relevant contributions and stakeholders. The STF experts will gather main user requirements from the Smart Home workshop and summarize main results of each workshop (see section 3.)
