Conformance test specification for CAM & DNM, GeoNetworking, Basic Transport Protocol and integration of IPv6 and GeoNetworking

What we do: 

This STF is developing conformance test specifications for the following ITS base standards:

  • GeoNetworking (media-independent functionality, media-dependent functionality ITS-G5A); ETSI TS 102 636-4-1 and ETSI TS 102 636-4-2
  • Basic Transport Protocol (BTP) for GeoNetworking; ETSI TS 102 636-5-1
  • Integration of IPv6 and GeoNetworking; ETSI TS 102 636-6-1
  • Co-operative Awareness Messaging (CAM) and Decentralized Environmental Notification Messaging (DENM); ETSI TS 102 637-2 and ETSI TS 102 637-3

The STF will produce 13 ETSI Technical Specifications (TS) on conformance testing. This resulting conformance test suites will be developed with the test language TTCN-3. The result of this work can be used to build a conformance test systems and it is extensible in order to allow for integration of tests based on future standards development.

The STF will also establish liaisons with relevant R&D projects and organizations, including:

  • EU projects related to GeoNetworking (FP7 GeoNet, FP7 PRE-DRIVE C2X, FP7 INTERSAFE2)
  • National projects related to GeoNetworking (SIM-TD)
  • Industry fora: CAR-2-CAR Communication Consortium, IPv6 Ready Logo Program/IPv6 Forum
The European Road Operators and Road Administrations including the CEDR organisation in the context of the ongoing liaisons and contacts between ETSI and CEDR. Detailed liaison with the Road organisations has been agreed on this particular project.

Why we do it:

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is an important new business domain of global, i.e. international, interest. This proposed action is part of the ongoing standardisation activities in the ETSI Technical Committee ITS to develop specifications for a set of network and data transport protocols for cooperative systems in intelligent transport systems. Unlike cellular networks, such as UMTS and others, these novel protocols enable direct and self-organizing ad hoc communication among vehicles and between vehicles and roadside infrastructure base stations without the need for a coordinating communication infrastructure. This activity is of vital interest for ETSI, and prepares precise actions based on the new STANDARDISATION MANDATE ADDRESSED TO CEN, CENELEC AND ETSI IN THE FIELD OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES TO SUPPORT THE INTEROPERABILITY OF CO-OPERATIVE SYSTEMS FOR INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT IN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY (October 2009).

For efficient, scalable and reliable communication, the protocols utilize geographical positions (‘GeoNetworking’) and are particularly designed to support applications for road safety and traffic efficiency, as well as integration with IPv6 mobility mechanisms (‘IPv6 over GeoNetworking’). This STF addresses the need to extend the existing base network-layer specifications with a set of test specifications for the GeoNetworking protocol suite over 5.9 GHz media.

The Co-operative Awareness Messaging (CAM) and Decentralized Environmental Notification Messaging (DENM) facilities have been initially specified in the Car-to-Car Communication Consortium. This STF addresses the need to ensure multi-vendor interoperability also for the application layer through the development of a set of test specifications.

How we do it:

The work of STF 405 is organized in common sessions, either at the ETSI headquarter in Sophia Antipolis, or at premises of the team members. ITS WG1 and WG3 delegates are consulted on a regular basis for guidance on the work. Results are presented to ITS WG1 and WG3 representatives for approval.

Mantis bug tracking system is used to organize the detected issues in the base specifications and to provide a transparent feedback to ITS WG1 and WG2.

This project develops test specifications following the draft ETSI EG 202 798 “ITS framework for test specifications” thus providing clear and consistent deliverables.
