Specialist Task Force 397:
Methods, parameters and test procedures for cognitive interference mitigation
for use by UHF RFID using Detect-And-Avoid (DAA) or other similar techniques
Who we are:
Team Leader: Friedbert Berens, FBConsulting
Team Members: Markus Desch, FEIG ELECTRONIC
Dirk Schattschneider, Deutsche Bahn
Georg Ramsch, Checkpoint
Josef Preishuber-Pfluegl, CISC
Dieter Horst, Siemens

Why we do it:
The STF 397 has the main charter to investigate, define and evaluate the
possible sharing mechanisms between future UHF RFID systems in the band 915 to
921 MHz and ER-GSM systems in the band 918 MHz to 921 MHz.
The basic assumption of the friendly spectrum sharing between the two systems is
the secondary use of the spectrum by RFID systems and the efficient deployment
of cognitive radio methods and flexible spectrum use by UHF RFID in order to
avoid any harmful interference from the UHF RFID system towards the ER-GSM
system.
The findings of the investigation phase will be published in an ETSI TS in
Q3/2010. The initial investigations and findings will be evaluated in a second
phase in which measurements will be made on a purpose-built test-bed. This
second phase of the STF should start in July 2010 based on a draft TS available
in June 2010. The final results of the STF work will be the basis for a new
harmonized standard for UHF RFID systems in the band 915 MHz to 921 MHz
including active mitigation techniques.
The much of the main work of the STF will be based on the existing standard ETSI
EN 302 208. The work will be carried out
in close collaboration with the ETSI ERM TG34 group on RFID systems and ETSI TC
RT TG EGSMR.

Time plan for the work:
The STF will produce the following deliverables:
DTS/ERM-TG34-010 (TS 102 902): Scope is to provide a technical description of
the DAA (or equivalent) mitigation techniques for UHF RFID implemented
technologies, adopted by ERM in November 2009.
DTR/ERM-TG34-09 (TR 102 903): Scope is to provide suitable RF compliance tests
for the DAA (or equivalent) mechanism of UHF RFID implemented technologies,
adopted by ERM in November 2009
according to the following time scale:
DTS/ERM-TG34-010:
- Start of the work mid-February 2010
- First report to
TG34
for review April 2010
- Stable draft for
ERM
review June 2010
- Final Draft for TG34 approval September 2010
DTR/ERM-TG34-09:
- Start of the work July 2010
- Final Draft for TG34 approval December 2010
