What we do

During a workshop entitled “IoT Standards Landscaping and Gap Analysis Workshop”, which the European Commission has organized in February 2017 in cooperation with the ETSI Specialist Task Force (STF) 505 on IoT, Security and Privacy as well as Semantic Interoperability and Platform Interoperability were identified as essential key elements.

The STF 547 provides a strong support to some of the European Commission policies in the domain of the Internet of Things (IoT). To some extent, the work of STF 547 can be seen as a continuation of the one of STF 505, though it takes into account a larger set of challenges.

The essential objectives of the STF 547 are to identify available standards and – as importantly - best practices in its areas of work; to build a bridge for the potential designers / implementers of IoT systems; and to support their work by providing comprehensive material for information, teaching/learning and demonstration with a very practical usage and implementation perspective.

Why we do it

The key role of Cybersecurity and the growing concerns of Privacy protection, in general and in IoT, have been reinforced by developments of the European Commission that include announcement of a "Cybersecurity Package" that may lead to specific cyber-security directives, and the coming into force of in May 2018 of REGULATION (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR - General Data Protection Regulation) on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, that replaces the ePrivacy Directive 2002/58/EC.

The European Commission intends to play an important role in support of these technical priorities and regulatory policies. There is an expectation for a framework of voluntary proposals coming from the industry for measures and actions (e.g., selection of reference standard and best practices, declaration of voluntary conformance, presumption of conformity to presume compliance with security/legislative framework).

The emergence of IoT ecosystems across Europe and beyond require a solid standardized architectural framework, offering the integration of advanced IoT technologies and fostering interoperability across IoT domains and applications, taking into account leading institutional and industry standards as well as their evolution paths.

How we do it

The STF is funded by the European Commission and integrated within the Work Programme of the SmartM2M Technical Committee (Smart M2M TC).

Apart from the task related to the STF project management, the STF works on the development of the deliverables of the STF (i.e. Technical Reports, Progress Reports and Final Delivery Workshop) within the following tasks:

  T4.2  Security: Teaching Material

             / interworking of existing standardized IoT Platforms
  T7     Plugtests™ preparation on Semantic Interoperability
  T8     Supporting the integration and coordination among the different domains in AIOTI
  T9     STF Dissemination Package, including the Delivery Workshop event

In addition to the TRs above, a Special Report (SR 003 680) is developed:

This SR is designed as a support for the dissemination of the STF results to a very large audience, beyond the technical community (addressed with the Technical Reports). It analyses a list of issues and provides guidelines and recommendations to all stakeholders involved across the whole life-cycle of IoT systems.
