What we do

The work of STF 602 is a compendium of a set of related activities that support the resolution of emerging needs in the area of ontology standardization in ETSI.
1.    To extend the SAREF application domains including a new normative extension for the smart lift domain in a context the sector stakeholders are already developing a full standard suite (ETSI TS 103 735 in TC SmartM2M) leveraging on the oneM2M system. The support of the SAREF experts in the STF will allow to also leverage the SAREF work to assure cross-sector semantic interoperability. It will be also a form of field test for the SAREF Specification framework and workflow using the SAREF Portal.
2.    To support the synergic use of SAREF and oneM2M by (i) assuring a full alignment between SAREF and the oneM2M semantic support (in particular the equivalence of core SAREF and the oneM2M base ontology); and, (ii) providing normative guidelines for the usage of SAREF over the oneM2M system,  ncluding the guidelines to assure interoperability with the oneM2M SDT (Smart Device Template) and the SAREF devices.

The STF expert work will be directly supported by TC SmartM2M members integrating the providers competences with oneM2M know-how, to assure proper integration and contribution oneM2M, and with Smart Lifts know-how to assure the alignment with this vertical sector.

Why we do it

In November 2015, the first version of the SAREF standard for smart appliances was published by ETSI TC SmartM2M (TS 103 264 V1.1.1).
The standard is based on the Smart Appliance REFerence ontology (SAREF), which was originally created in a standardization initiative launched by the European Commission (EC), DG CNECT, conducted in collaboration with ETSI TC SmartM2M. The EC, as a first step, identified an immediate need of the current market to reduce the energy utilization by managing and controlling Smart Appliances (for example, in a house or an office building) on a system level. In particular, the Industry and the EC raised the need for a common architecture with standardized interfaces and a common data model to assure interoperability. Without these two components, the current market would continue to be fragmented and powerless. Therefore, the development of a reference ontology was targeted as the main interoperability enabler for appliances relevant for energy efficiency, and ETSI accepted to cover the communication aspect and provide the necessary standardization process support.
Within the period 2016-2020, ETSI TC SmartM2M requested two Specialist Task Force (STF) to provide input on the management of SAREF, and identify and create possible SAREF extensions in specific domains. These extensions have been published as follows:
-    TR 103 411 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances; SAREF extension investigation”
-    SAREF for Energy (SAREF4ENER): TS 103 410-1 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances Extension to SAREF; Part 1: Energy Domain”
-    SAREF for Environment (SAREF4ENVI): TS 103 410-2 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances Extension to SAREF; Part 2: Environment Domain”
-    SAREF for Building (SAREF4BLDG): TS 103 410-3 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances Extension to SAREF; Part 3: Building Domain”
-    SAREF for City (SAREF4CITY): TS 103 410-4 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances Extension to SAREF; Part 4: City Domain”
-    SAREF for Industry & manufacturing (SAREF4INMA): TS 103 410-5 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances Extension to SAREF; Part 5: Industry & manufacturing Domain”
-    SAREF for Agriculture (SAREF4AGRI): TS 103 410-6 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances Extension to SAREF; Part 6: Agriculture Domain”
-    SAREF for Automotive (SAREF4AUTO): TS 103 410-7 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances Extension to SAREF; Part 7: Automotive Domain”
-    SAREF for E-Health and Ageing Well (SAREF4EHAW): TS 103 410-8 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances Extension to SAREF; Part 8: E-Health and Ageing Well Domain”
-    SAREF for Wearable (SAREF4WEAR): TS 103 410-9 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances Extension to SAREF; Part 9: Wearable Domain”
-    SAREF for Water (SAREF4WATR): TS 103 410-10 “SmartM2M; Smart Appliances Extension to SAREF; Part 10: Water Domain”

The availability of a network of standardized semantic models that consistently grow and systematically extend SAREF within TC SmartM2M in ETSI will allow not only implementers and manufacturers of Smart Appliances - and more in general IoT devices - to fully support various, multiple and cross-domain use cases for their devices. It will enhance the interoperability between their devices and the devices of other manufacturers and will allow them to broaden their market.
The overall deployment of Smart IoT devices (e.g. in the automotive domain) will directly lead to a quick adoption of the related M2M ETSI standards as developed by oneM2M. These standards potentially address a multi-billion product market.

How we do it

The work is developed in 2 main technical activities in corresponding technical tasks and one management task to coordinate the overall work:
•    T1 – Management
•    T2 - SAREF for Smart Lifts
•    T3 - SAREF and oneM2M SDT interoperability

Task 1 – Project Management and coordination with other organizations (leader: Mauro Dragoni)
Objectives: Provide appropriate development of the work in term of quality and timely delivery to ETSI TC SmartM2M.
Another objective of this task is to ensure that the STF fluently interacts with relevant actors (especially oneM2M) in order to ensure that the work is well coordinated and synchronised.

Task 2 - SAREF for Smart Lifts (leader: Raúl García Castro)
Objectives: Develop a new SAREF extension for the Lift sector on the basis of the related TR finalized in spring 2020 and the corresponding TS whose finalization is currently foreseen at end 2020. It will also test the portal https://saref.etsi.org with respect to a new vertical sector presenting a consolidated IoT data model.

Task 3 - SAREF and oneM2M SDT interoperability (leader: Bob Flynn)
Objectives: To assure full alignment of SAREF and the oneM2M base ontology and to provide guidelines about how devices adopting the oneM2M SDT (Smart Device Template) informational model can interoperate seamlessly with oneM2M devices and systems adopting SAREF and vice versa. Direct contribution and participation to oneM2M is foreseen to exploit the STF results, with the support of the SmartM2M members attending oneM2M.
