Specialist Task Force 422:
Test suites for European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) and the ISO CALM FAST service

Who we are:

Team Leader: Dr. Hans-Joachim Fischer ESF GmbH esf@stf422.its-standards.eu
Team Members: Dr. Fausto Caneschi LECIT Consulting s.r.l. lecit@stf422.its-standards.eu
Mr. Yann Garcia FSCOM yann.garcia@fscom.fr

What we do:

STF 422 develops test specifications (PICS, TSS&TP, ATS) for base standards from

  • ISO:        "CALM ITS FAST Services" and
  • ETSI:      "DSRC HDR".

ISO TC204 WG16 developed the International Standards ISO 24102 "ITS Station Management" and ISO 29281 "Non-IP Networking", which are from the Basic Set of CALM Communication Standards. ISO 29281 contains the basic specification of the ITS FAST networking & transport protocol, and its applicability for ISO 15628 access technologies and applications, currently used for Electronic Road Tolling. ISO 24102 contains the specification of ITS FAST Service Advertisement.

Note that originally the specification of ITS FAST Service Advertisement was contained in ISO 29281.

ETSI ERM TG37 has developed the ETSI Standard ES 200 674-1 "Electromagnetic Compatibility and Radio Spectrum Matters (ERM);Road Transport and Traffic Telematics (RTTT);Part 1: Technical characteristics and test methods for High Data Rate (HDR) data transmission equipment operating in the 5,8 GHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band". The first version of the related test suite TS 102 708-2-x as developed at ETSI TC ITS WG2. DSRC HDR is a core technology for Electronic Road Tolling.

STF 422 will extend the existing test suite TS 102 708-2-x in order to cover the whole functionality required for the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS).

STF 422 will develop the test suite TS 102 985-x for the ITS FAST networking & transport protocol and parts of the test suite TS 102 797-x covering ITS FAST Service Advertisement.

For more details, see our Terms of Reference

Why we do it:

The two activities are done for different reasons, but are logically interconnected, as both are in support of the European Electronic Toll Service EETS.

CALM ITS FAST is providing core techniques for cooperative ITS with a focus on ITS applications requiring single-hop communications, e.g. between a roadside ITS sub-system and a vehicular ITS sub-system, or between vehicular ITS sub-systems. This technology was developed at ISO TC204 WG16 in close cooperation with the EU project CVIS, which implemented and validated CALM standards successfully. This essential core technology is developed to support e.g. Electronic Road Tolling, and the ITS Application Store, which is considered to be one of the keys for success of cooperative ITS. Test specifications are prerequisites for implementation of these protocols in instances of ITS stations.

DSRC HDR was selected by the EC as one of the core technologies for EETS. In order to allow for timely introduction of EETS, test specifications for the complete DSRC HDR protocol set are a prerequisite.

Dr. Caneschi and Dr. Fischer are independent experts heavily involved in EETS and in ITS, and thus have a major interest in suitable test specifications.

Mr. Garcia is an excellent expert on TTCN-3. TTCN-3 will be used to specify the Abstract Test Suites (ATS) in line with the ETSI Guide EG 202 798 "ITS Testing Framework"

How we do it:

STF 422 is organized in the following activities:

  • Analysis of the existing base standards. This includes identification of possible errors, ambiguities and drawbacks, both editorially and technically. The result will be improved specification documents (if applicable) used as input to the development of the test suites
  • Development of reports to the parent bodies of the base standards, proposing improvements of them, if applicable.
  • Development of Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma.
  • Development of Test Suite Structures and Test Purposes (TSS&TP).
  • Development of Abstract Test Suites in TTCN-3 (ATS).
  • Close interaction with stakeholders in the parent bodies ISO and ETSI, but also with other global stakeholders considering the urgent need for International Harmonization of ITS.
  • Presentations at conferences and expert meetings, e.g. the ITS world congress 2011, the ETSI ITS workshop in 2012.
  • Processing of feedback from stakeholders.
  • Maintenance of an informative web site.
  • Production and distribution of flyers.

The work will be done partly in sessions, e.g. at the premises of ETSI in Sophia Antipolis, or as homework activities using also Internet Meeting Tools to discuss and exchange ideas between the STF members.

Deliverables:

STF 422 will develop / amend the following deliverables:
