What we do:

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) is one of the very successful ETSI standards. With more than 600 million DECT devices in the market, DECT is the worldwide leading technology for cordless telephony on both, residential and business (PABX) scenarios.

DECT is one of the IMT-2000 technologies and has a worldwide market (including the U.S.).

ETSI TC DECT and STF 382 are currently developing the New Generation DECT, a further evolution of the standard, introducing new advanced features such as High quality wideband (7 kHz) and superwideband (14 kHz) voice, support of internet telephony, and broadband data connections.

DECT New Generation is based on the mature and reliable DECT technology and will be back-compatible with current DECT devices.

STF 382 is in charge of the evolution of the DECT base standard, EN 300 175 v2.3.1, parts 1 to 8, and the evolution of TS 102 527-3 v1.2.1, Technical specification for DECT New Generation; part 3: extended wideband speech services.

STF 382 is also in charge of conducting the preliminary studies of DECT-Advanced, a further evolution of the DECT radio interface introducing OFDMA and MIMO technologies and able to provide target bitrates of 1 Gigabit/sec.

The DECT base standard or common interface (CI) is the core part of the New Generation DECT specifications.

The Technical specification for DECT New Generation; part 3: extended wideband speech services, defines the advanced telephony services and procedures to be used in DECT New Generation. The specification covers and is focused on VoIP (voice over IP) telephony over internet networks.

Why we do it:

The DECT manufacturers including the chip manufacturers have come to the conclusion that the evolution in Internet and Telecom areas creates the opportunity for a new generation Cordless standard, taking fully advantage of the convergence Internet/Telecom.

The DECT Forum has approached TC DECT to develop the specification for next generation DECT products, based on the market requirements as provided by DECT Forum. They also stressed the urgency of the work and therefore we agreed to develop the specification in phases and selected the features to be realized in each of them.

The new generation DECT will not only further increase the technical performance, but also the value of the DECT products.
