Thank you Walt and Mike for excellent teamwork, and I also wish to thank
stakeholders, Technical Committe HF and other ETSI colleagues who provided us
with very useful input and comments!
New STF for standardization of components needed
The STF has identified the need for a new STF that will build on the result
from STF265. There is a need to standardize a rule definition language for
defining automatic activation of profiles, a set of components (including
attributes, operations and relations) and a common terminology related to user
profile management. Network and terminal issues will also be examined.

What we do:
The deliverable
of the work will be an ETSI Guide (EG) that describes issues relevant to users
and their need to manage their user profiles in order to customise terminals and
services to help them achieve efficient communications.
Purpose of the STF
User profiles are becoming increasingly important in the customisation of
terminals and services to provide efficient communications. The result of this
STF will be useful for converging networks and combinations of narrow and
broadband access (today's reality), as well as Next Generation Networks (NGN).
NGN and the convergence between telephony and Internet services offer a wide
range of new terminal and service definition possibilities, and a much wider
range of application in society. This broadening of the communication
possibilities demonstrates the importance of harmonized user profiles aiming at
e-Inclusion, in order to suit different users and different situations.
The goal of this STF is the creation of a well-founded guide for service and
device developers to solve the common issues of user profile management in both
personal and business applications.
Focus on users’ requirements
User profile management will be critical to the uptake and success of new and
advanced communication services. It is therefore very important to understand
users’ requirements in this area. The approach of this STF will be to
concentrate, not only on a theoretical approach, but also to involve user
representatives from the early stages of the work in defining requirements in
this area.
Time plan for the work:
The work has been completed in December 2005.
The STF has identified the need for
a new STF that will build on the result from STF265, see “New
STF for standardization of components needed” above.
Workshop 22-23 March
STF265 organised a workshop on
Personalization of ICT products and services
by means of User Profile Management
Part II – Confirming the guidelines and further need for standardization
22-23 March 2005
Shengqiong Wang (Huawei Technologies), Paul Foster (BT), Mike Pluke (Castle
Consulting, STF265), Walt Brown (Intel, STF265), Françoise Petersen (Apica,
STF265), George Bilchev (BT), Jeff Foley (BT), Denis Royer (Goethe University
Frankfurt am Main), Venura Mendis (BT), Stefan Figge (Goethe University
Frankfurt am Main), Philippe Charas (NovaVista), Quin Collier (BT), Henrik
Thuvesson (TeliaSonera), Alain Guigui (Hewlett-Packard), Gérard Kubryk
(Université de Nice)
The work on defining guidelines on “User
Profile Management” has progressed and we organized the workshop to discuss
the interim results, to identify any further need for co-ordination with other
projects and to invite new and existing stakeholders to share their views on
personalization and user profiles in next generation networks and evolving
technologies.
In addition, we discussed the need for further
standardization in this area and talked about the new Work Item on “User
profile management standardization”.
I wish to thank you all
for your valuable participation in the workshop! A special thank to the
invited speakers who gave interesting presentations that resulted in a great
number of interesting discussions which are very useful for our work.
Best Regards,
Françoise Petersen

User profiles for communications
and information in your preferred language(s)
A new STF will look at an area where user profiles can be really useful –
language and cultural preferences for personalization of products and services!
STF 287 has started, “User-oriented handling of multicultural issues in
broadband and narrowband multimedia communications”, see
http://portal.etsi.org/stfs/STF_HomePages/STF287/STF287.asp
The terms of reference say the following about user profiles:
- Methods by which an individual's language abilities and preferences can
be expressed will be investigated. The ease with which the encoded preferences
and abilities can be stored in user profiles will be an important factor in
evaluating these methods.
- User Profiles containing information that assists in the delivery of
services that meet a person's culturally specific requirements will need to be
able to store this data.

The views expressed do not necessarily represent the position of ETSI in this
context.
