Technical Committee on Human Factors - Guidelines for real-time communication services
Conclusion
In a packet switched network, UDP-IP is the protocol used for real-time person-to-person communication. UDP-IP does not retransmit packets. The effect of this is that packets may be lost.
A lost packet may occur for three reasons:
- Arrival too late,
- No arrival at all,
- Packet too corrupted.
From a user perspective the packet loss may be experienced as:
- Longer overall delay and
- An image with distortions.
