Conclusion

In a packet switched network, UDP-IP is the protocol used for real-time person-to-person communication. UDP-IP does not retransmit packets. The effect of this is that packets may be lost.

A lost packet may occur for three reasons:

  • Arrival too late,
  • No arrival at all,
  • Packet too corrupted.

From a user perspective the packet loss may be experienced as:

  • Longer overall delay and
  • An image with distortions.
