The workshop is organized by TC STQ, STF 294 and MESAQIN, under contract to
ETSI
Recent developments in telecommunications,
such as VoIP and UMTS increasingly promote the introduction of new services,
including wideband speech communication, often in noisy environment such as
cars. Respective work is underway in various standardization bodies; however
there is still a lack of standards providing information on the requirements for
both wideband terminals and wideband transmission systems.
There will be a huge demand for wideband speech communication under noisy
conditions in hands-free and video phone applications in the near future.
Devices designed for such applications will have to rely on non-linear and time
variant signal processing in order to be capable of providing speech quality
that satisfies users' demands.
Discussions on a detailed technical level between researchers, developers and
standards makers on recent developments and areas of future work are a
pre-requisite and necessity for the provisioning of superior speech quality and
efficient noise cancellation algorithms to the users of wideband communication
systems.
The workshop key goals are to:
-
Discuss the status, latest advances and
trends in wide-band speech and audio coding, in particular in presence of
disturbing sounds and noise;
-
Present the results of STF 294: Improving
the quality of eEurope wideband speech applications by developing a
standardised performance testing and evaluation methodology for background
noise transmission;
-
Exchange information and establish
relationships between research, state and industrial organizations involved in
the topic.
This workshop is of major importance to
researchers, developers and standards makers in the field of telecommunications,
interested in the latest developments in the new generations of speech
communication systems.
Addressed topics will include speech and audio wideband coding, noise
suppression and its artifacts, and quality assessment.
The workshop is to be held on the 22nd and 23rd May 2007 at ETSI Headquarters in
Sophia Antipolis, France.
Abstracts and papers should be sent to
