WORKING GROUP ON BROADBAND SATELLITE MULTIMEDIA (BSM)IntroductionThe Broadband Satellite Multimedia (BSM) WG was created to meet the demand for standards for a new generation of satellite networks that will be used to deliver broadband multimedia services. Broadband Satellite Multimedia (BSM) satellite systems are used for high quality interactive (two way) multimedia communications. BSM systems typically provide transmission capabilities ranging from hundreds to thousands of kilobits per second and operate in the FSS at Ku and Ka-bands. As a particular example, BSM systems can be used as
satellite access networks to provide broadband access to the Internet to address
a mass market and to cover large regions. These broadband satellite access
networks will complement wired and wireless access systems in delivering
telecommunications services into and within residences and business. Working group objectivesThe objectives of the BSM WG are to review and develop technical documents on broadband satellite multimedia systems addressing, but not limited, to the following areas: 1. To produce specifications, standards and other ETSI deliverables for broadband satellite multimedia in response to specific Work Items based on the recommendations listed in TR 101 374-2. For example : · Definition of satellite system architecture supporting broadband services. · Service requirements for broadband communications systems. · Definition of architectures, interfaces and protocols, including both air interface standards, and user terminal specifications. 2. To produce specifications that promote efficient interworking and interoperability between satellite networks and other networks. 3. To promote adequate representation of BSM specific issues in other technical fora . 4. To liaise with relevant other standardization bodies (e.g. TIA, ITU, IETF) for the benefit of both.
